Lonely vs. Alone

Abandoned.

Misplaced.

Insecure.

Overwhelmed.

Lonely.

These are just a few feelings that can come on me suddenly and often, it seems, without a valid reason.  But that last one…loneliness…is present a lot.  It’s not because I don’t have people around me…I’m just lonely for him…and no one else can fill that place.  But there are times when I just feel…alone.  For instance, the other night while I was driving home, I was crying out to God and telling Him that I felt so completely alone.  He spoke to my heart and said “Jess, you know nothing about being alone”.  I felt rebuked, but also encouraged.  My God PROMISES that He will NEVER leave me nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5)…so He’s right, I can never know what it truly feels like to be alone because He is always there.  Am I lonely?  Yes, of course I am and God knows that…but am I alone…absolutely not!

Recently, I read in my devotions Colossians 2:10 – “and you are COMPLETE in Him, who is the head of all principality and power”.  Such balm to my soul…but it’s something I have to remind myself of because I don’t feel complete…in fact I feel quite the opposite.  But living out my faith means I will stand on that promise and I will claim it as mine and I will choose to believe it.

That’s what God has been up to in my heart.  I am not alone…and I am complete in Him.

  1. Hi Jess,

Even though I have not been able to speak to you please know that Mickie and I have been shedding tears with you and keeping you and your family in constant prayer over the last year.

Your blog post tonight was very timely and had some great Scripture in it. We are discipling a girl who has just come to Christ and she has a very rough and hurt filled past. She texted earlier tonight and was on the verge of hurting herself and I was able to share the Scriptures you posted and they went straight to to her heart.

Please keep writing and sharing and know that God is continuing to use you in ways you probably never would have imagined.

We love you and will continue to pray for you.

  2. Amen….Hebrews 13 is an excellent chapter to encourage us…..

One I keep by my bedside is:
You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3

May you rest in His perfect peace this day!

  3. Jess,

I read Hebrews 13:5 last night for my devotions. I’m going through a checklist of put off/put on after studying out holiness, and last night it was put on contentment. Thanks for the reminder that we are complete in Him. You are constantly on my heart and I’m grateful to know how I can continually pray for you and the kids. Love you much dear friend!

  4. Here are a few stanzas from a great poem (God Moves in a Mysterious Way by William Cowper) that makes me think of you and that I pray for you:

    Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
    In blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
    But trust Him for His grace;
    Behind a frowning providence
    He hides a smiling face.

    His purposes will ripen fast,
    Unfolding every hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Thank you for this strong word about loneliness and being alone. There is so much truth in what you share, Jessica!

  5. The truth, Jess…that is what you need to say to yourself…always. You are complete in Him. Every day we are bombarded by thoughts. I think I heard one time we have 1000’s in a day and over 300 of them are negative. You are what you think. Guard your thoughts. I struggle with this. Set a guard and Phil. 4:8 everything. Only the truth…only the truth…only the truth.

  6. Jess, Once again we find ourselves praying for you and today as I was riding the bike, I heard a song that I had put on the ipod, and it made me think of you, especially after reading today’s post. It is from Sidewalk Prophets and it spoke to me and I am sure that it will speak to you as you wait for God to fill the void. Be assured, we will be praying. Here’s the words to the song ” You will never leave me”

    Lyrics:

You may find me in the midnight
    Fallen down upon my knees
    Or riding out another storm
    Praying for some peace
    Even when I feel alone
    Jesus, this I know
    You will never leave me
You will always be the one
    Who calms the raging sea
    You will never leave me
You will always be the one
    Who’s holding onto me
You may lead me to the desert
    Where I’m empty and afraid
    Wandering this nothingness
    Thirsting for the rain
I will not give into fear
Cause Lord, I know You’re here
    You will never leave me
You will always be the one
    Who calms the raging sea
    You will never leave me
You will always be the one
    Who’s holding onto me
    Though my heart is breaking
    And my faith is shaking
    Standing strong cause I believe
You have promised me, You’ll never leave
    You will never leave me
You will always be the one
    Who calms the raging sea

    Behind the Song:
“You Will Never Leave Me states that no matter where we are and no matter what situation we find ourselves in, God is always there.” – Sidewalk Prophets

We are thrilled that you keep finding your peace in the “TRUTH” which is God’s word to us. It is always a great place to hang out. Keep your eyes on Him, He’s coming soon.

  7. Jessica,
Even though I don’t know always know what to say to try to bring encouragement, please know I am praying still, for you and your family. It is so beautiful to hear how even though your feelings are so unpredictable right now (and rightly so), you are clinging to what is solid; the unchanging and timeless truths of God’s Word. Thank you for the reminder today! 🙂

  8. Awesome thoughts on lonely versus alone! It is amazing how God will take the time to “tutor” us privately when we are going through something we think we cannot make it through.! He has been faithful to do that for me on quite a few occasions and I remember them very well, exactly where I was and what he told me and it was life-changing! It is also awesome how much difference “taking every thought captive” to the obedience of Christ can make. For me it was the difference between making it or breaking. Thanks for sharing your special thoughts . Love you!

  9. I was thinking of you this morning as I prepare a lesson for pre-schoolers on Matthew 28:20 “I am with you always…” I was reading David’s words in Psalm 25:16, 17, 20 & 21– “Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Guard my soul and deliver me; do not let me be ashamed, for I take refuge in You. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for You.” The book of Romans and other places in the Psalms tell us that those who trust in the Lord will never be “disappointed” or “ashamed” I believe. I am praying for you.
    With love in the Lord,
